Designs for Fun: Quest Giver
Pax East and BlizzCon
I've always enjoyed going to gaming conventions such as PAX East or BlizzCon. Although I am not big into cosplaying, I once created a fun and functional costume for PAX East.
I had the idea of becoming a quest giver like one might encounter in World of Warcraft while leveling. I created the iconic "!" as part of my staff, ordered a wizard hat and some leather pouches, and added some other basic wizard accessories. On a plain white shirt, I wrote simple instructions like "Come ask me for a quest!"
I designed five different quests, printed them on thick-stock business cards, and handed them out to strangers. The quests included challenges such as "Find someone cosplaying as a character I name, take a selfie with them, and return with the picture to claim your reward."
Over three days, I distributed 200 cards and six pounds of golden chocolate coins. Several attendees later told me that participating in my quests was the highlight of their weekend.
Why is this in my portfolio?
Because I believe everything in life can be designed to be more joyful and satisfying. Just as I am proud of the user interfaces I have created, I am equally proud of the experiences I have designed.
